Hibbing, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- State Troopers near Hibbing, Minnesota had to put a horse down along Highway 73 due to a possible traffic hazard.

According to Lieutenant Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol, authorities were called Sunday morning to the report of a horse in the middle of the highway.

The troopers who responded as well as a few passersby tried to corral the horse for about two hours. Authorities also tried to find the owner of the horse but no one recognized who the horse belonged to.

After a few near misses with traffic along the highway, troopers had to shoot the horse.

Lieutenant Roeske says that the troopers had to make the call to put human safety first over the welfare of the horse.

Authorities were able to locate the owner of the horse on Monday and told them what happened. They say the owner understood why they had to put the horse down.
