Police investigating homicide in Ashland, Wis; 14-year-old in custody

Ashland, WI (NNCNOW.com)--- Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a murder in Ashland night.

Though it remains unclear, neighbors tell us a 14-year-old allegedly killed his step-dad.

"The city of Ashland Police Department is investigating a homicide," said Captain Jim Gregoire of the Ashland Police Department.

Authorities responded to a home at 1806 Cary Street in Ashland around nine Monday night. It is there they found 52-year-old William Saari dead, a victim of a homicide.

Police say a 14-year-old boy has been taken into custody as a sole suspect in the case. He is currently being held at a juvenile detention center in Ashland.

""We believe the person that is responsible is in custody and we'll just continue doing a thorough job trying to complete the investigation," said Capt. Gregoire

Just blocks from the crime scene is Ashland Middle School, where the alleged suspect attended. In the wake of the death, the Ashland School District had counselors available for students and staff.

"There was a family tragedy in the community and there will be additional resources available today," said Ashland Schools Superintendent Keith Hilts.

Hilts said the school received floods of phone calls Tuesday from concerned parents. He wanted staff, students and the community to know they are not alone and there is a strong support system for them when dealing with grief.

"Why did this happen and what could be done to prevent this? All of those same questions everytime there's a tragedy those are the same questions that always get asked and there needs to be a place with some caring adults- people with training who can process that," said Hilts.

"We really pass on our condolences to the family, deepest sympathy, I'm not sure, how do you move forward after a tragedy like this?"

A tragedy that has surely rocked a small town.

The Ashland Police Captain that under Wisconsin Statute, and due to the severity of the case, the suspect could be charged as an adult.
That decision, of course, would be left up to the district attorney.
