Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) -- Findings of a University of Wisconsin Superior survey found people in Northern Wisconsin are opposed to Gogebic Taconite's proposed iron ore mine.
On Friday, researchers presented those findings to the Global Studies Minor Advisory Committee.
The survey was part of an undergraduate research study about the environmental and economic impacts the proposed mine would have on the towns around the Penokee Hills.
Nearly 62% of responders say they 'generally opposed' or 'absolutely opposed' the mine.
Researchers also found that people don't think they have enough qualified workers to support a mine.
"Very few workers in the mining sector reside in the region. In the random sample, essentially zero workers; and then in the self reported sample we found about 11 workers out of those 800 or so respondents who work in the mining sector or natural resource extraction sector," said Zamira Simkins, assistant professor of economics at UW-Superior.
Researchers say they want to present their findings in Madison next semester.
