Ely, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A car rollover near Ely, MN Wednesday night sent four people to the hospital with minor injuries.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of a car accident about 8 miles up the Echo Trial north of Ely around 11:30 Wednesday night.

An initial investigation revealed that the driver, 20 year old Matthew Sampson of Shafer, MN was attempting to pass a car in front of him around a curve on wet pavement, when he lost control of the car and slid off the roadway, overturning in the ditch.

Sampson along with his three passengers, 19 year old Nicholas Harrington of Hugo, MN; 21 year old Anthony Payson of Winona, MN; and 18 year old Phillip Olsen of Brooklyn Park, MN were transported to Ely Hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities believe excessive speed on wet pavement and improper passing were factors in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
