Sandstone, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A Sandstone Daycare provider is under investigation after a 3-year-old child was found walking alone along the highway.

On Wednesday, the Pine County Sheriff's Office received numerous 911 calls about a young child walking in the traffic lane on State Highway 23 in Sandstone.

When officers arrived, they found the 3-year-old girl in arms of a good samaritan. The person told deputies she saw the girl walking on the highway from the window of her home and ran out of the house to get the child away from the road. She went on to say that at least one vehicle swerved around the child.

Authorities located a daycare approximately one block from where the child was found. The day care had a fenced in play area filled with children and the deputy noticed that the gate to play area was open.

When deputies made contact with the daycare provider, it was determined that the child was missing from the center.

Authorities observed indications that the provider was intoxicated and performed a field sobriety test.

Pine County Child Protection arrived on scene and ordered the daycare closed.

Parents of all the children were notified and picked up their kids before the scene was cleared.

The matter remains under investigation and will be referred to the Pine County Attorney for charges.
