The Interlake Steamship Co. will rename and rechristen the MV Charles M. Beeghly to honor former U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, according to our news partners at Business North.

When it leaves winter layup, the 805-foot laker will sail as the MV Hon. James L. Oberstar. It will be formally rechristened in a Duluth ceremony later this spring.

Built in 1959 at the American Ship Building Co. yard in Toledo, Ohio, it was later modified at Fraser Shipyards, Inc. in Superior. The vessel’s carrying capacity is 31,000 gross tons.

Interlake operates a fleet of nine self-unloading bulk carriers on the Great Lakes and carries approximately 20 million tons of bulk cargo annually.
