Some Opt-Out of Un-Fair Campaign About White-Advantages

DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - The Un-Fair campaign, meant to address the topic of white - advantage, has sparked discussion across the Northland.

While the campaign has been endorsed by some entities and leaders as Mayor Don Ness, others such as the College of St. Scholastica have decided to opt-out.

St. Scholastica's communications executive director says while the college supports the Un-Fair campaign's right to approach the subject its own way, the college already addresses white-privilege differently.

"Mentoring and close discussion is really the best way for St. Scholastica to approach a topic like white-privilege. We're happy to keep doing it," said Bob Ashenmacher, the executive director of communications for St. Scholastica.

"It's not something that we're pointing fingers and saying 'you're a racist', but we want to raise awareness about these unfair advantages," said Joan Varney. She is also one of the leaders for the Un-Fair campaign.

St. Scholastica holds programs on the subject in a broader context including class and race, in which 120 faculty and staff have taken part.
