Sioux Falls, SD (NNCNOW.com) --- A 2-year-old boy believed to be the son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has died from injuries sustained in an alleged assault by a male friend of the boy's mother, it was confirmed on Friday afternoon.
Sioux Falls police confirmed that the boy has died in a Sioux Falls hospital, but they are withholding his name per request of the family. The Minneapolis Star Tribune had reported earlier Friday that the boy was Peterson's son.
The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported that 27-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault on an infant in the case, but police say additional charges are now being considered.
Peterson was excused from Vikings practice on Thursday for a "personal matter," but he returned to the field on Friday and said he plans to play Sunday afternoon against Carolina.
"I really appreciate all the support that I’ve been receiving from fans, the Vikings organization," Peterson said. "This is a private matter and I would ask you all to please just respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand."
