Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com)--- Demolition has begun on a 40-year-old apartment complex on the UMD campus.

Crews started tearing down the Stadium apartments yesterday after officials at UMD determined the financial burden of bringing the buildings up to code was too great.

Officials did a study in 2008 looking at the cost of renovations for the apartments...which came with a price tag of $12 million dollars.

To continue being used, the building would have needed elevators installed, handicap accessible bathrooms, and major maintenance work.

The plan for now is to use the lot for green space, but there are other possibilities being thrown around including more athletic space.

"That's one of the ideas is to have more of an idea for tailgating and game day programming for the fans, but also parking is always an issue here as well as additional sports fields. We're pretty land locked right here with our campus," said project manager John Kessler.

Many furnishings and appliances were reused from the Stadium Apartments for Ianni Hall, a new residence hall that opened in 20-11.
