St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Whooping cough has left its mark on Minnesota in 2012, with 4,433 confirmed cases throughout the year.
That's compared to 661 cases confirmed throughout 2011.
The Northland has seen about 200 cases of pertussis throughout 2012.
The last time the state saw the number of pertussis cases sky rocket was in 2010 with about 1,100 confirmed cases throughout Minnesota.
Health officials are hoping that with more vaccinations this year that 2013 will see the number of whooping cough cases drop.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, as of November, Wisconsin and Minnesota held the top spots for the number of pertussis cases across the nation.
