For some, gardening is a hobby, for others it's a passion.
Laurie Gaudino combined her passion for gardening with recycling and turned it into a business.

"My sister and I like to go to garage sales and pick up items and it just seemed more reasonable to use old recycled things to put my container gardens in and plant them, than to go buy expensive brand new pots." says Gaudino .

The store is called Garden Junkie, and it specializes in selling home and garden décor that's been made locally and mostly from repurposed material.

Gaudino tells me, "People love it! They come into my shop, I have so many people that come in that are older and they say, "I've got this in my barn or garage or shed and I would have never thought of using it this way!""

Not everyone can look at something old and think of an idea for a new use. That's where Gaudino can help. Her store is full of reused materials.

"Most of my display items are repurposed. My cash counter is an old work shop out of a basement in a house in the east end that I got in an estate sale. I hang my planter on old ladders." Gaudino explains.

Repurposing used to be a way of life, but Gaudino says the current trend is to throw things away.

"Our grandparents never threw anything away and then we came into this disposable society and people wanted something new, they just threw the old thing out and didn't think of the consequences of that. So I think the younger generation, people now are looking at how full our landfills were, and we recycle now, which we didn't do years ago." said Gaudino.
