Putting Less Pens to Paper and More Fingers to Keys

By KBJR News 1

Increased numbers of school children are putting less pens to paper and more fingers to keys.

Insight School of Minnesota, an Internet-based high school program, is allowing kids to get out of the classroom and onto the information superhighway for an online high school education.

The program offers more than 120 courses ranging from the fundamentals to advanced placement options.

The Minnesota program is state-funded, it is based out the Brooklyn Center School District in the Twin Cities and there are no tuition costs involved.

However, school officials acknowledge that online is not always the answer.

"First of all online education isn't for every young person," said Kurt Morem of Insight School. "So we tell our parents and young people that if they are being successful in their traditional high school that's where they need to be."

Victoria Rilea's two daughters have been home-schooled for most of their education.

The only exceptions were in second in third grades when they were in a conventional classroom setting.

Now she's switching her kids to internet.

"I really feel it's important that hey get to know more about computer technology and the internet, and know to use it as a good learning tool," said Rilea.

So what part of traditional schooling is not appealing to some students?

"The part where, me and my sister, we'd be done and ready to go for the next problem or question and all the others kids would be sitting there trying to figure out what the question was," said Krystal Wright, enrolled Insight student.

Despite possible distractions, Officials say the internet gives students more flexibility when it comes to balancing out their schedules.

"They can log-in 24 hours a day and depending on their schedules, work on their classes with a certified Minnesota teacher," said Morem.

School officials say students are eligible for internet service reimbursement costs.

The program is statewide for students ages 14 through 20.

Insight has classes underway in four other states, and about two-thousand students are enrolled.

The Minnesota program is still recruiting kids for the school's first year in the state.
