College Party Crackdown

By KBJR News 1

Twin Ports college students are back in the Northland - gearing up for another semester of school.
But studying isn't the only thing they'll be taking part in.

Duluth said early Friday evening that they haven't issued many underage consumption tickets thus far.

But things are just getting started and authorities say it's not unusual to issue dozens of citations at one location.

Many college students have moved in and it didn't take long for the parties to start.

"Drinking, playing games, inviting the freshmen in," Andy Myers, UMD student.

Police say they're keeping pace with they party crowd by ramping up patrols in the college communities-trying to ensure that things don't get out of hand.

"The police department is really concerned about their personal safety and we don't want these students to drink too much and harm themselves in any way," said Sgt. Leigh Wright of the Duluth Police Department.

And many students have already had multiple run-ins with the cops.

"They've been here twice and they busted a few of our parties last night, but we keep it going," said Myers.

But where does the line get drawn?

"If they're all 21 years and older we will leave, but if we have to come back, we'll break up the party," said Wright.

And some students say they don't mind the extra reminders from police.

"I mean they just told us make sure you're not loud it wasn't a big deal." said Seth Wolf, UMD student.

Police are allocating four officers that will exclusively handle party patrol this weekend and next weekend.
