Coleman and Franken Release Statements on Court Ruling

By KBJR News 1

On Tuesday, both Al Franken and Norm Coleman released statements about the Minnesota Supreme Court election ruling, in which Franken was declared the winner.

Five of the seven Supreme Court justices sided with the district court's earlier decision saying Franken, the democratic candidate, won the senate election in Minnesota.

Coleman said he would not appeal the High Court ruling.

The election process has dragged on since November of last year.

The Coleman campaign was seeking to include more rejected absentee ballots in hopes of erasing Franken's recount lead. Today Coleman spoke outside his home saying he rests his case.

"Every vote should count and we pushed that to the highest court and we had a determination and they have issued their judgment and now you move forward," Coleman said.

On Tuesday, Al Franken held a press conference and said he's pleased with today's ruling.

"I'm also humbled," Franken said. "Not just by the closeness of this election, but by the enormity of the responsibility that comes with this office."

The state DFL party issued a statement on Tuesday congratulating Franken. Congressman Jim Oberstar and the state speaker of the house also issued similar statements.

The focus now shifts to Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. On Tuesday afternoon Pawlenty said he will sign the election certificate so Franken can be seated.
