Duluth Police Concerned About Bar's Liquor License Expansion

By KBJR News 1

A request by a Duluth bar for a liquor license expansion as part of a softball tournament is drawing concerns, because it's for the same weekend the Hells Angels rumble into town.

Despite concerns, the request was approved.

Player's Grandstand requested permission to sell alcohol outside the establishment in a nearby parking lot for August 1st. A softball tournament and party are scheduled that day, but on Monday, Police spoke out in the chambers saying a large crowd and the Hells Angles don't mix.

"They look to come into a community , produce a high level of visibility and establish their dominance...in a sense taking over a particular town or a particular venue," said Lt. Dan Chicos of the Duluth Police Department.

Rick McArthur, the owner of Player's is expecting to throw a party for about 700 people after the softball games. He says there won't be any problems.

"I don't think that's going to affect us," he said. "I think most of them will be out of town by then...I don't think the Hells Angels are going to make a bad name for anything."

But police say the Hells Angels look for big crowds and cause trouble.

"They single out citizens ...and target them for assault," said Chicos.

But Councilor Garry Krause said he's in favor of expanding the bar's liquor license.

"If you talk with sheriffs that have been in towns that have had the Hells Angels, they aren't all bad experiences," Krause said.

But McArthur said failure to expand his liquor license would hurt financially.

"There's just a lot of work that goes into this-- I think this brings a lot of money into the community, McArthur said.

City council members approved the expansion of Player's liquor license with an eight to one vote.
