Police Respond To Citizen Concerns About Homicide Handling

By KBJR News 1

Duluth police continue to investigate Sunday's shooting in the Central Hillside.

The investigation is moving ahead amidst controversy, with some area residents, including the man who was shot in the leg, criticizing the police response.

The Northland's NewsCenter spoke with Darell Burks on Tuesday. He's the man who was shot in the leg during the incident.

Burks declined to go on camera but said he was not pleased with how police handled the crime scene.

Burks was at the scene when gunfire broke out Sunday night.
He took a bullet in the thigh as the situation unfolded. Burks said when he ran down an alley to talk to police and get help for his gunshot wound, he says he was slammed up against a wall and thrown to the ground by police.

Burks said he was held on the ground for about 40 minutes before police allowed emergency medical responders to attend him. At one point, Burks says he passed out from the pain and blood loss.

Police respond by saying it was a dangerous and volatile scene when they arrived. Cops says they were not about to take any chances.

"One of the primary concerns that they (police) have is for the safety of the neighborhood," Deputy Chief John Beyer of the Duluth Police Department. "Secure the people that are there to make sure they're not in possession of a firearm--that they're not one of the shooters."

No arrests have been made as yet. Authorities say they're continuing to talk with people as the investigation continues.

Police are asking if anyone has any information that might lead to the shooters, they should call the Duluth Police Department's violent crimes unit at 730-5050.
