'DWI Chair' Bidding Is Over $37,000

By KBJR News 1

The infamous DWI 'La-Z-Boy' chair is fetching big bids on eBay.

Proctor police are auctioning the chair on eBay after it was used in a drunken driving incident.

On Saturday, the chair was going for over $37,000.

"This is really like a god-sent blessing to us," said Chief Walter Wobig of the Proctor Police Department.

Dennis Anderson of Proctor is the chair's now former owner. Authorities say he was three-times over the legal limit when he crashed the 'La-Z-Boy' into a parked car last year.

"I think it sucks, because they're benefiting off a DUI that I got and it's just wrong," said Anderson.

Anderson says he forfeited the chair in an effort to reduce charges against him as a result of the incident.

"I think it stinks, but I had no choice," he said.

When it comes to the issue of driving under the influence of alcohol, police say they don't discriminate, even when it comes to motorized chairs.

"We're not going to show any favoritism or anything else," said Wobig.

Right now, cops are gearing up to cash in on the chair.

"I look at it as getting some necessary equipment or items," said Wobig.

But Anderson says he's not as enthused about the high bids.

"It frustrates the hell out of me," said Anderson.

Authorities say the motor chair incident is not the first time Anderson has driven drunk. Police say they have to be equitable when it comes to enforcing the law.

"This is serious, people's lives are affected forever," said Wobig.

As for the auction, there's still time to bid.

"In our wildest dreams, we never thought this would rise to such a national and international level," said Wobig.

If you're interested in placing a bid on the chair, the auction will run until Tuesday.
