Residents Speak Out About Hit-And-Run In Duluth

By KBJR News 1

Duluth police are continuing their investigation into a hit and run crash that left a teenager seriously injured.

The incident happened Last Saturday. Authorities have a 27-year-old Duluth woman in custody in connection with the crime.

In light of Last Saturday's hit-and-run crash, nearby residents say they're concerned for their safety along Rice Lake Road.

"I think it's really scary, I cross Rice Lake Road everyday," said Morganne Salonek, a UMD student.

Police say the hit-and-run incident on the roadway left two injured.

"It makes me concerned because it's a place that I go on everyday," said Patrick Davison, a UMD student.

And authorities say the crash put an 18-year-old in the hospital with significant injuries.

"We've had two fatals this year with pedestrians, but they're not typically the hit-and-run variety," said Investigator Ryan Morris of the Duluth Police Department.

College students living in the vicinity of the crash say Rice Lake Road can be challenging for pedestrians.

"Cars flying by--it makes it hard to pull out...even just going for a run on the side of the road, it makes you a little nervous," said Davison.

After striking two people along Rice Lake Road, police say the driver fled the scene. And authorities say one of the crash victims is still in critical condition.

"Hit-and-runs to pedestrians is rare," said Morris.

Some residents say improvements should be made along the roadway.

"There's not sidewalks," said Salonek.

In the meantime residents say the hope drivers will pay extra attention behind the wheel.

I think it's really scary that someone would just leave after hitting someone, knowing that they were badly injured," said Salonek.

Duluth police are still investigating the crash. Anyone with information about the suspect's whereabouts prior to the incident is asked to call authorities at: 730-5655
