Local Group Waiting On City Approval For Car Racing On Duluth Street

By KBJR Manager

A local group wants to race cars on a Duluth city street, with the city's approval.

Duluth Promoter Ryan Kern is the one behind the event.

It would be an invitational race along a closed course that would allow classic-type muscle cars to race one at a time, along a single–lane, being timed for speed, as Julie Pearce reports.

What people may be imagining as a scene from "The Fast and the Furious" along this quarter–mile stretch, is actually far from what people might get to see.

Regardless, businesses along that stretch are voicing their concerns.

"As a business and as an entity in the community, we're concerned about public safety, but we do have our business issues too,” said Doug Carlson, Asst. Dir., Goodwill.

Doug Carlson, the Assistant Director at Goodwill says that access to the building is necessary for their weekend crews and the donating public.

On the flip side is Dean Carlson with Pro Sound & Light, also located off Garfield Avenue.

"It sounds really exciting; I mean it's a good location for that because they've got the long straight strip,” said Dean Carlson, Pro Sound & Light.

In a proposal that he has until next Wednesday to submit, Kern will be addressing the logistics of the event.

He and the Duluth Police Dept. will be looking at everything from fire hydrants, telephone poles, to spectator safety.

"As long as it's done safely, I think it will be great for the community.”

Kern agrees.

"The most important thing in this whole event is safety,” said Kern. “And, we've addressed that as our number one concern from the very get go."

He also thinks the uniqueness of the event will put Duluth on the map.

"It brings people into the community, it brings tourism dollars in, and it really generates a level of excitement in the community."
