Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Lieutenant Steve Stracek of the Duluth Police Department speaks with KBJR 6 and Range 11 News Today about the rise in heroin use in the Northland.

Stracek says the people trafficking heroin typically come from violent backgrounds, causing officers to deal with more violent situations when pursuing offenders.

"Regarding an arrest we made [last week] a fellow had a gun along with his drugs and we're seeing that more and more," said Lt. Stracek, "It doesn't necessarily change the way we do business. We always try to be very cautious with how we deal with these individuals, but certainly we're heightening our awareness as to who we're dealing with and taking more time to assess those risks as we start those investigations to make sure we account for the potential for these folks to be armed."
