Duluth, MN - (Northland's News Center) - Minnesota Foodshare says this could be the busiest winter ever for Minnesota Food Shelves.

Because of the increased need in the Northland, two young brothers are stepping to help families in need this year.

They are little boys, with big hearts.

"We just thought of feeding hungry kids," Gavin Bulthuis says.

Eight year old Gavin Bulthuis, and his four year old brother Evan, have been pooling their efforts together to raise 14-hundred-dollars in order to help children in need in the Northland.

But they are a little behind on their goal.

"We need a few more hundred dollars," Bulthuis says.

Gavin came up with the idea in 2009 while shopping for back-to-school snacks and supplies with his mother, when he learned there were children who didn't always have meals.

"I just mentioned that he was very lucky, that not every kid had a mom and a dad who could provide those things. And so he asked why and had questions about how we could help them," says the boy's mother, Kari Bulthuis.

Thus leading Gavin and Evan to take action and collect money and food.

"Potatoes, like ketchup and mustard and black olives, broccoli and ranch," 4 year old Evan Bulthuis says.

Last year the boys raised enough food and funds to donate more than seven-thousand meals for families in the community...making their parents very proud of their efforts.

"Incredibly proud. It's amazing to see how much they enjoy helping other people and how much they're learning about the importance of it at a young age," Kari Bulthuis says.

All of the donations Gavin and Evan collect will be donated to the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank.

And with all the work nearly complete...the boys have just one thing left to say...

"Thank you for helping."

The boys still need at least three-hundred dollars in order to meet their goal.
