Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Tuesday was a special night for members of the Boys and Girls Club in the Northland. It was the annual Youth of the Year (YOY) celebration, a title that is the highest honor a club member can receive.

Director of Teen Services, Alec Staffon, and YOY Committee Member, AJ Axtell, joined us Tuesday to share about the event.

Eighteen-year-old Shawn Gawboy from the Lake Vermillion Boys and Girls Club is their winner of the YOY Celebration. Gawboy will compete against others for the Minnesota YOY title and a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands, the recognition program’s national sponsor.

She is described to have sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.

If Gawboy wins at the state competition, she will compete for the title of Midwest Region YOY and receive an additional $10,000 scholarship from Tupperware Brands.

Five regional winners will head to Washington, D.C., this September to compete for the title of BGCA’s National YOY. They will meet President Obama in the White House and receive up to $50,000 from The Rick and Susan Goings Foundation.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Northland says the YOY program is a year-round program for youth ages 14-18 that promotes and celebrates members' service to Club, community and family, academic performance, moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking abilities.
