One Confirmed Dead in Superior Shooting

Superior, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) -- One man is dead following a shootout with police in Superior late Friday afternoon.

It all started with a car jacking at gunpoint followed by a chase and ending behind a mobile home park just before 5:00 Friday afternoon.

The incident began at Walgreens when a man held a woman up at gunpoint and demanded the keys to her car.

Police were called and they were soon able to locate the vehicle. That's when a chase ensued. Police chased the vehicle until the driver came to a stop and fled the car.

He than began running through the woods behind a nearby trailer park.
Several officers ran after the suspect.

Police say the suspect was carrying a gun with him and did not comply with repeat orders to drop the weapon.

Neighbors reported hearing multiple shots fired and described the scene as chaotic.

"I saw five squad cars chasing another car going down Catlin Avenue, said Mike Thompson, an eyewitness. "The car stopped. One of the guys bailed out and ran into the field and I heard that there were some shots fired."

Police say the suspect raised his weapon towards the officers, that's when multiple officers fired their guns, killing the suspect.

Police say officials tried to revive the man but it was too late.

The identity of the suspect has not been confirmed.

The names of the officers involved are also not being released at this point.
