Task Force Developed to Help Duluth Tourism Industry

The serene lake, the shops, and the variety of festivals are just some of the attractions that bring tourists to Duluth.

To help fund the tourism industry, Duluth has a tourism tax in place, which generates about $7.5 million a year.

But the big question is where should all of the money go?

The Duluth City Council will create a task force consisting of 9 people; 3 of which will have to be city councilors, another 3 will have to be from the tourism industry, and at least 1 person has to be an average Duluth citizen.

But some councilors say they are worried about a potential conflict of interest, while many of those in the tourism industry say it's a good idea.

"My concern is people may be protecting their turf a little bit and advocating for their particular organization. The task force information that comes out is only as good as the participants that are involved," says Duluth City Councilor Todd Fedora.

"We think about how can we further this industry? How can we bring more people to town? How can we attract more people here? To bring those people together to share their ideas and their experiences I think does nothing but forward the process on how to best allocate those dollars," says Tony Bronson with Grandma's Corporate Office.

The Task Force will serve as an advisory board, therefore their recommendations will still need to be approved by the city council.

Members for the task force have not yet been chosen.
