Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- United States Army Sergeant Retired Brian Saaristo of Barnum, Minnesota has been named one of ten Northland recipients of the 2013 American Red Cross Heroes Awards.

He will receive his award at a breakfast in the Twin Cities on June 6th for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Sergeant Saaristo lost his legs below the knees on the battlefield in Iraq in 2006.

But it didn’t take him long to get back up on his new feet and take up a new hobby.

Today he is using his love of golf to help other wounded veterans and their families.

The Sergeant says the game has been a game changer in his life and he wants to pay it forward.

Sergeant Brian Saaristo is making a difference here in the Northland and beyond.
