Deer River, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- In Deer River just west of Grand Rapids, there's a coalition of young and old people working to keep high school kids away from substance abuse.

These students are part of a group called The Movement at Deer River High School.

It's a drug and alcohol prevention program.

Deer River native Heather Schjenken advises the student group along with their adult mentors.

"I had adults make a difference in my life so it's part of giving back,” she said. “It's one of the reasons I moved back here because this school really made an impact on my life and I want to do the same thing."

Schjenken says that unity among younger and older people in Deer River is what drew her back to her hometown after college.
