Energy Efficient lighting is an important step in making your home or business green.

In this weeks "Your Green Life" Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson takes a look at a business that takes this idea to new heights.

Having sufficient outdoor lighting for customers is important for all of our area businesses. Incandescent Bulbs are the worst because they are expensive to operate and have a short lifespan. Compact Fluorescent are a better choice, but induction bulb may be the best choice of all.

"We consulted with Murphy Oil and Brad Carlson for hour to light their parking area and being more energy efficient in doing it, using the lowest amount of energy as possible but still getting the light output that they needed through products like induction lighting", said Ben Hanson with Green Products and Solutions.

Induction Lighting has been around for more than 20 years, but is a relatively new technology in the U.S. These bulbs are just as efficient as compact fluorescent, but they turn on instantly and are rated to last 100,000 hours.

"And we are assuming we are going to see is each fixture over a ten year period I think it's a $1300 savings on each fixture", said Brad Carlson with Murphy Oil.

The induction lighting bulbs were just part of the company's eco–friendly plan. The placements of each fixture and also strength of each bulb was an important factor so the lot would be well lit and also safe.
The company also took steps inside the plant to cut energy usage.

"Variable Frequency Drives on their motors which increases the life of the motors and also lets them run at a higher level of efficiency", said Ben Hansen.

These controllers can basically make the motor run "on–demand"...a big step in energy saving. In Superior, I'm Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson. The Northlands NewsCenter.

Murphy Oil has 67 induction light fixtures which is expected to save them over 87–thousand dollars over the next decade.
