In this week's "Your Green Life" Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson takes a look at how Northland College made the Green Honor Roll.

A campus garden, solar panels, and even a few wind turbines are a common sight across the Northland College Campus. It was this commitment to green that got Northland noticed.

"Northland College has been engaged with the environmental cause for a long time," said Michael Miller. President of Northland College.

In this past year the school has been part of Sierra's Magazine's "2011 Cool Schools", the Princeton reviews "Green School Honor Roll" and "Best in the Midwest".

The Dexter library building is one factor that contributed to these honors. It was awarded a LEED Gold certification in 2008. The photovoltaic array on the roof helps cut energy usage plus helps to keep the building warm in the winter months.

In addition, the campus was also rated as the fourth most bike friendly American campuses of 2011.

"We also have bike rental and other facilities, so when students don't have a bike of their own they are able to use those," said Miller.

And the school isn't done yet.

"Be dark sky friendly, where we have lights that are not giving off light pollution, something that I want to help work towards. To get Northland College to be a dark sky campus," says Emily Stephenson. Sophomore at Northland College.

Switching to fixtures that only output light in a downward direction would not only help reduce light pollution from the campus but also aid bat and bird migration.

"What will sustainability look like, how will it be defined in ten years? We need to stay on the front edge of that," says Miller.

At this point Northland College has two wind towers and five photovoltaic arrays.
