We all know that the larger our building the greater the heating costs.

But in this weeks "Your Green Life" Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson visits the Superior School District which has worked hard to make its carbon footprint smaller despite the size of their buildings.

Retrofitting older buildings to be energy efficient but still comfortable can be challenging, but at the Superior High School they were able to do just that.

"The biggest thing we did is get rid of the three 350 horsepower Keewanin Boilers and what we replaced them with was 4 110hp energy efficient Hearst Boilers", said Jeff Solderlund. Superior School District Maintenance Supervisor.

Replacing the old boilers allowed the building's heating system to be computer controlled which in turn allowed it to run at a much higher level of efficiency.

These heating systems also control the water temperature in the swimming pool.

"On all of our circulating heat drives we've put frequency drives. This is a unit that can slow a motor down or speed it up", said Solderlund.

That technology helps with the energy demand the school has on a daily basis. These systems can even recycle the building's heat while keeping the air inside fresh.

"Another great project we did a few years back, we were losing 1000 gallons of water per day due to evaporation in our pool. By putting the covers on we are down to 1000 gallons a week of loss", said Solderlund.

In a normal week the school now saves 6,000 gallons of water from being heated and treated.
In total, the Superior School District has saved 27 percent of its utility costs since implementing these energy saving measures.

Future green projects planned by the district will allow students to compost on site which will further reduce food waste.
