Back in April we brought you the story of a family in Duluth who took on the challenge to cut their energy bill.
In this week's "Your Green Life" Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson introduces us to a new climate idol family ready to take on the transportation challenge.
What is your favorite mode of transportation? If you prefer to take your car, you know about the high cost of gas now days and it seems like there is no end in sight. The Duluth Sister Cities and Climate Idol has challenged four families to reconsider their mode of transportation around our area.
"They have had to start saving receipts for their gas, and to monitor their gas and how much gas that are using and try to use less gas during this time period", said Melissa Kadelec with the Duluth Sister Cities.
The families will learn the tricks and tips to start driving in an eco friendly manner to squeeze even more miles out of every drop of gas.
"That means taking the heavy foot off of the accelerator pedal and thinking about consciously driving a little slower", said Larry Spears. One of the Climate Idol families.
The families were also encouraged to try other forms of mass transportation. For some it was more of a challenge than others due to their location, but regardless of what form of transportation you do, remember to be efficient when you're out and about.
"You chain your trips together, so that you reduce the number of trips. If you think about the number of times you go to the grocery store; you go for a bottle of milk, you go for some oranges and you go back for to get some cereal. If you put all of those together, it's a different way about thinking about how we use our car and transportation", said Spears.
So if you still prefer to drive the car, or hop on the bicycle, remember to plan your route because you may discover a faster and more efficient way of reaching your destination. In Duluth, I'm Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson, The Northlands NewsCenter.
The Climate Idol Families have recently started their food challenge and Jeff will share that challenge with us in the coming weeks.
