Northland Legislators Express Concern Over Governor's Budget Cuts

By KBJR News 1

A group of democratic lawmakers got together today in Duluth to outline their concerns with Governor Tim Pawlenty's state budget fix.

The Northland legislators have been uneasy since the governor used his un-allotment power to balance the budget his way.

Laura Langemo reports the group expressed fear, that these cuts will hurt the state for many years to come.

"The legislators are gone and their not coming back."

When it comes down to Governor Pawlenty's revised budget many state legislators have shown concern over the deep cuts made in local government aid, healthcare, and education.

"This is going to cost 5,000 jobs across the state and it's going to be in these sectors."

In order to tackle the budget problems legislators say Governor Pawlenty is shifting money.

This means the Governor has begun pulling money from future appropriations to use in the current time frame.

Yet, the money will still need to be paid back.

"When are we going to have the excess money to pay these revenues back? I think at some point we are going to realize there is no money to pay the shift back and the shift will become a cut."

Some legislators say this budget will fix current problems while Governor Pawlenty is in office but will create an even larger deficit for the future.

"We need to get ourselves back up to a level playing field because in the next biennium we're going to face an even bigger deficit, a minimum of a $7 billion deficit."

And if this problem isn't fixed it will only result in more cuts.

"We're going to get the financial forecast in November and then we'll get another one in February and depending on weather it's up or down we will have to make more cuts."
