Ships draw thousands of people to Canal Park every year and many of those folks stop by the Marine Museum there to learn more about the big boats.

In a little over a week, ship fans can honor Lake Superior's sea going heritage while supporting the museum itself.

Dave Anderson tells us how.

It's said that the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center and its outdoor park in Duluth is second only to the Mall of America as a tourist attraction in Minnesota.

It pulls in nearly a half million people a year.

"I think if you include the people in the park we might be around a million people by the time those people are included."

To keep all those people interested, the museum needs new exhibits and maintenance.

The money that helps with that comes from an annual fundraiser called the Gales of November.

This year's Gales happens November 6th and 7th.

The two day event celebrates Lake Superior's maritime history.

Ticket packages run from 20 to 55 dollars but college students can get a bargain this year.

"All they have to do is show a student ID card and they will be allowed in free because we want to share our marine heritage."

Those who work at the museum feel sharing that heritage will keep it from being forgotten by future generations.

"I think Duluthians and the people who come to Lake Superior to visit and vacation would be much poorer as a result of our history going away."
