Federal Stimulus Dollars on the Iron Range

By KBJR News 1

Some of these buses have been running for years and need to be replaced. Their replacements may be coming soon. This week Congressman Jim Oberstar announced that Arrowhead Transit will receive about $1 million in stimulus money.

Arrowhead Transit serves about seven counties. Transit officials said the new money they receive will help them purchase about 15 new buses. They said it couldn't have come at a better time.

Arrowhead Transit director Jack Larson said, "We have twenty plus buses that are meeting the federal guidelines for disposal. And in order to replace those buses this is a good time to get new buses."

Larson said a good transit system in rural areas is a must have. He also said it's not just the elderly who use the buses. As a public transit system, they've seen all sorts of people use buses, for all sorts of reasons.

"There's a lot of transit dependent people out there that count on us to get them to work, get them to shopping and other things that are important to their life," said Larson.

Arrowhead transit operates more than seventy five buses and serves about half a million people each year. Arrowhead transit expects new buses to arrive in September or October.
