Deer River man sentenced for girlfriend's murder

Deer River, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A Deer River man will spend the next 26 years in prison in connection with the murder of his girlfriend last summer.

50-year-old Eugene Nason, appeared in Itasca County District Court on Friday in connection with the beating death of 43-year-old Sonya Smith in July 2013.

A criminal complaint states an argument sparked the incident.

Preliminary autopsy results show the woman died of a ruptured liver and spleen, broken ribs and bleeding in the brain.

Friday, he pleaded guilty to one count of second degree murder.
