Grand Rapids, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A 25 year old Detroit Lakes man has been sentenced to almost 5 years behind bars in connection with a Grand Rapids burglary back in April.

Steven lee Carpenter was sentenced to 4 years and 10 months in prison and ordered to pay $500 restitution, $125 fine and submit a DNA sample.

Carpenter is charged with First Degree Burglary for breaking into a home and stealing a gun and other items back in April along the 600 block of Pokegama Avenue.

According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, officers tried to stop Carpenter as he fled on foot to a nearby house.

Authorities say they secured the home and, with the help of a Crisis Negotiator, were able to get Carpenter and a 16 year old boy to leave the house.

Today's sentencing was part of a plea agreement.
