Duluth Man Convicted of Sexual Assault with Pre-Teen

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - A St. Louis County Jury has found the Duluth man on trial for sexual assaulting a pre-teen in 2009 guilty.

The Duluth News Tribune reports after three and half hours of deliberations, 47-year old Steven Oppel was found guilty on counts of first and second degree sexual assault.

He was found not guilty of a second count of first degree sexual assault. Oppel, who was representing himself, was charged with sexual conduct with a victim under the age of 13.

The victim testified that Oppel touched her inappropriately a number of times with the first instance when she was just nine years old.

Oppel faces 12 years behind bars.

Sentencing is scheduled for February 28th.
