Pine County, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Authorities have released the names of those involved in the shooting in Pine County that left one woman in the hospital and one man dead.
Authorities say 55 year old Daniel Shilts allegedly shot his ex-wife Dawn Christen in the chest before he shot himself and died.
According to the Pine County Sheriff's Office, authorities received a call Wednesday night of a shooting along the 29000 Block of Sunny Hill Road in rural Pine County.
Police say that the woman who had called 911 said she received a text message from Christen saying she had been shot by her ex-husband and that he was still inside the house.
Deputies from the Pine County and Chisago County Sheriff’s Offices responded to the scene and established a perimeter around the house. Numerous attempts were made to contact Christen by phone and text with no response.
A Pine County Sheriffs Supervisor says he was able to make contact with Daniel Shilts, asking him to move away from the house, however police say he refused and instead went back inside, turning off all the lights in the house.
The Pine County SWAT team then entered the house and found Christen in the bathroom with a gunshot wound to her upper chest. She was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth where she is listed in serious condition.
Daniel Shilts was cornered in the living room by officers where he allegedly threatened suicide while holding a pistol to his head.
Officers of the Pine and Chisago County SWAT Teams attempted to convince Shilts to safely resolve the situation, however after two hours, police say Shilts shot himself.
Deputies immediately began medical aid but Shilts died at the scene.
Authorities say their investigation so far has revealed that Shilts allegedly forced entry into a rear door of the house before Christen came home.
Police say there were no active restraining or protection orders against Shilts.
This incident is currently under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
