Cloquet, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- A man wanted for questioning as a possible material witness to an attempted murder has been charged with child neglect.
37-year-old John Bemis III of Cloquet is wanted by authorities for allegedly abandoning his daughter.
He was reported missing by his family on January 9.
Bemis is the ex-husband of Marie Majerle, the woman accused of shooting her estranged husband Richard Majerle in January.
According to a criminal complaint, Bemis and Majerle were living together with their 14-year-old daughter before Majerle was arrested and Bemis left town.
The complaint goes on to say that Bemis was questioned by authorities once, and agreed to another interview on January 7th.
However, investigators learned that the 14-year-old daughter came home from school on January 7th, and Bemis was gone.
He took personal property, a large amount of cash, and left his job without any explanation.
Now, on top of the search for Bemis as a material witness, a warrant has been issued for his arrest in connection with alleged child abandonment.
"His daughter had no clue that he was not going to be there and he wasn't home of course she was left alone without either parent," said Carlton County Attorney Thom Pertler.
Pertler says that the child is being taken care of by friends and family.
Bemis is described as being 5'11", 180 pounds with brown hair and green eyes.
It is believed that he is traveling in his GMC pickup.
Anyone with information on his location is asked to call 911.
Police say Bemis is not a suspect in the attempted murder case. The child neglect charge is unrelated to the attempted murder.
