Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com)-- Superior authorities are searching for an arsonist after flames engulfed a garage this weekend, destroying everything inside including a car.

Authorities say arson fires have doubled this year over last in Superior.

They estimate the number of arson fires at 15-16, compared to 8-10 in 2011.

This most recent act of arson now has one neighborhood on edge.

"They're all on the lookout for anything or anyone," said Denise Ojeda, the most recent arson victim. "All the neighbors were very concerned for us and now for themselves."

Arson has plagued Superior this year.

"Well 2012 as far as arson fires in the Twin Ports goes it was a really busy year," said Superior Fire Investigator and Captain David Johnson.

Officials can't pinpoint a reason for the uptick of arson fires, but say prevention is possible with more vigilence.

"Make sure things are locked, that it's well lit, that the garbage is put away. Don't leave things out that can start fires," said Johnson.

A watchful eye can be the best deterrent.

"So it's important for the people to be vigilant around your property. If somebody is walking by that normally isn't there in the middle of the night, take notice of who they are."

It takes a community of vigilant people to help prevent this criminal act.

"It makes you want to be more careful, more watchful," said Ojeda.

Officials estimate that the most recent Superior arson fire destroyed over 15,000 dollars worth of property.

Authorities are encouraging anybody with information to step forward and call 911.
