Hermantown, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Authorities are alerting residents in Hermantown of a recent spike in burglaries and thefts in the area.

Over the past two months, over 20 vehicle prowls, 14 residential burglaries and 9 business burglaries have been reported. Officials say this is a dramatic increase compared to years past during this same period.

The Hermantown Police Department is encouraging residents to be vigilant and to call 911 or your local police department to report suspicious activity when it is occurring.

Authorities also urge the public to remove valuables from your vehicles when attending movies, out to dinner, shopping or at work. Also remember to lock your home and garage doors when away.

Officials also suggest that you take the time to record serial numbers and take photos of your valuables in the event you do become a victim of crime. This will assist officers during their investigation and may aid in quicker recovery of your stolen items.
