Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The Duluth Police Department is warning residents about an on-going Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes scam.
Criminals are notifying victims through the mail that they have won a large amount of money from the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes.
The letter asks the victim to call the suspects of the scam. When the victim calls the suspects, they tell them that they need to pay the taxes on the winnings (usually around $15,000) before they can collect the prize.
The suspects instruct the victims to send the money to a fictitious person in Canada.
Many of these cases are currently under investigation by the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police and law enforcement agencies around the country.
Cases that have been reported to the Duluth Police reveal that the suspects are targeting the elderly.
If you have any information related to this type of a scam, please contact the Duluth Police Department.
