Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Rep. Erik Simonson (DFL-Duluth) joined Michelle Lee on KBJR 6 & Range 11 News at Five to talk about what Monday's verdict in Jim Carlson's Federal Trial means for the fight against synthetic drugs across Minnesota.

"I think it sets a good precedent. I think it strengthens many legal cases that will occur across the state, across the country. A conviction like this is good news for prosecutors anywhere trying to bring some of these things to court," Rep. Simonson told Michelle.

Rep. Simonson is leading a statewide initiative in the battle against the substance. House Speaker Rep. Paul Thissen created the Select Committee on Controlled Substances and Synthetic Drugs in May.

"Our committee has been working through the summer across the state holding hearings to get an understanding of the statewide problems and it's significant.'

Rep. Simonson said the committee is focusing on strengthening current statutes when it comes to the sale of synthetics and creating an educational program about the hazards of the substance.
