St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A manhunt came to an end Wednesday night for a man police say fatally shot a Mendota Heights Police officer during an afternoon traffic stop.

The West St. Paul Police Department took 39-year-old Brian George Fitch Sr. into custody just before 8:30 p.m.

Both Fitch and an unidentified woman were shot in a shootout with police.

They were taken to Regions Hospital.

Fitch is accused of shooting 47-year-old Scott Patrick, who had been with the department since 1995.

He later died at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Officer Patrick leaves behind a wife and two teenage children.

"He was a very dedicated police officer. A family man who absolutely adored his children," said Mendota Heights Police Chief Mike Aschenbrener.
