Walker Man Sentenced for Murder

Walker, MN (NNCNOW.COM) -- A Walker man has been sentenced to serve almost 20 years in prison for murder.

21-year-old Sheldon J. Smith was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the March 21st murder of 22-year-old Jason D. Howard.

Smith previously entered a plea of guilty to the offense of Second Degree Intentional Murder.

According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement and medical emergency personnel were called to a residence on Midway Drive near the city of Walker around 10:15 p.m.

Officials learned that Howard had been stabbed in the upper chest and was airlifted to a hospital in Brainerd where he succumbed to his injury.

Investigation revealed that two groups of individuals had been having a series of physical and verbal confrontations in days prior to March 21st.

The situations between the two groups escalated into a physical fight where Smith stabbed Howard.
