Duluth, MN - (Northland's NewsCenter) - College student's ages 18-to-24 have the highest smoking rates...and are the most aggressively targeted by the tobacco industry.

In order to combat those statistics, multiple colleges in the Northland are joining forces with the American Lung Association to promote the national "Kick Butts" event.

The event encourages smoking cessation and promotes resources in order to help individuals quit and provides materials for students to help them kick the habit of smoking.

"Our main goal is education and promotion and to let people know what their options are and what's out there to support them in their effort to quit smoking because I don't believe any of us can do it alone," says Superior College Nursing Students, Bridget Leighton and Cheryl Richards.

Health care costs related to tobacco use in Saint Louis County exceed 73-million-each year.
