DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - More residents near East High School in Duluth will be paying to park in front of their own homes now that the city council voted to expand the residential permit parking zone, but many of them believe it's worth the fee.

With too little student parking on the high school campus, students were parking just beyond the existing residential permit zone filling up streets such as Gladstone Street during the day.

The expansion of the permit zone up to Dodge Street is meant to discourage students from parking in the neighborhoods.

Only those with permits would be allowed.

Some residents said they shouldn't have to pay fees to park in front of their own homes, when the school district did not provide enough parking.

I don't feel it's acceptable when I'm paying my property taxes. I even have a double lot on Gladstone Street and I can't find parking in front of my house," said one resident.

"I think you could solve the problem without expanding the area and I'm against expanding the parking area," said another.

The school district is planning to free up more space for student parking in the future.
