DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - Students at Laura MacArthur Elementary went home today with a bag of books.

The school was one of five in Duluth where students got extra books, encouraging them to spend some extra time reading through the Scholastic Summer Challenge.

Studies show students who read through the summer are shown to retain more of what they learn and do better in school.

"Each student received eight level books and a combination of fiction and non-fiction. They received a backpack to carry the books home in. There was an application for a library card and then some activity sheets," Joan MacDonell.

Funding for the books is provided through the Federal Title 1 program.
