Boat Covered in Zebra Mussels

Duluth, MN (The Northland's NewsCenter) --- As people take their boats out of the water for the season more and more are finding the bottoms covered with the foreign aquatic invader zebra mussel.

These pictures show the contamination from one season sitting in Mille Lacs Lake. According to the DNR a female zebra mussel can lay between 50–thousand and 400–thousand eggs in a season.

If a boat, contaminated with zebra mussels goes back into the water, it can dramatically affect its environment by invading the base of the food chain, causing a ripple affect that can result in native species dying of hunger.

The DNR recommends that boaters carefully wash, drain and dry their boats and docks before transporting them to another lake
