Preserving and Canning fruits and vegetables used to be a way of survival, but now most would consider it a hobby.
In this week's "Your Green Life" Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson shows us how this hobby can help you live a greener life.
Right now across the Northland Raspberries are ripe and ready for people to pick. The bright red berries will soon be followed by carrots, corn and apples. But if you're planning on pulling out the jars and pots and pans to preserve these garden fresh foods, you might want to look into using the newest techniques.
"This is designed to train volunteers who will work with our county extension office on for how to preserve food safely", said Barbara Ingham with the Wisconsin Extension: Food Safety Specialist.
The reasons for canning veggies and turning berries into jam are different for different people...some want to store them for later use, others might want to sell them.
"One might want more control of what they eat, a little bit within their diet. Others it's a desire to use what they grow, or produce grown locally", said Barbara.
Many farmer's markets have a delightful array of various fruit jams and jellies...some might even offer the rare but delicious chocolate raspberry sauce.
"This is chocolate raspberry sauce, we are bringing this up to a boil and then set the timer for one minute", said Janet with the Extension Office.
The Minnesota Extension office classes also offered tips on preserving other foods such as meats and fruits. All the lessons were designed to give healthy and delicious tips on greening up your diet. In Duluth, I'm Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson. The Northlands NewsCenter.
