Duluth, MN
At North Start academy in Duluth a creative solution for a new age problem emerged. What to do with all the left over holiday gift cards?Make them into picks.

Aundrea Kinziger, the Music Specialist at North Star Academy in Duluth told me about the process. "Gift cards worked best, those recycled gift cards that everybody wants to throw away when they are done getting the cash off of them"

Guitar picks come in all thicknesses and designs, but this allows the kids to be creative and learn about reusing. But the school has always been about reducing reusing and recycling.

"Our school I think helps out with recycling a lot in many different areas we have a blog for email where our teachers are always sending emails to one another saying, does anybody have this at home that they can bring in and reuse whether it's for art projects or kindergarten projects." Said Abby Scott, a Music Educator at the Academy.

Teaching our children at a young age that things can be reused in creative ways is instrumental for our future generations. And the kids sure seem to have fun with it!

Matthew Wade, another Music Educator for the Academy said, "So far we've heard lots of great compliments and lots of excitement from the kids they really want to learn how to play guitar, they're excited to get these new picks that they can earn by working their way through, playing different songs throughout the course of the year."

The school hopes the new guitar curriculum, and recycling practices, will be something the students take with them for the rest of their lives

"It's just all over the place and it's just a something that we can do at the school to put our best foot forward in helping our community and our environment." Said Scott.
